Torg Eternity: Building a Better Gospog – Cyberpapacy

February 19, 2018

Next up in my series of takes on the cosm-specific gospog for Torg: Eternity is the unexpected…

Cyberpapacy

The Cyberpope uses his gospogs differently than other High Lords. Instead of bolstering his army, they are a false flag operation that attacks citizens and the church, thus providing a ready danger for the church to protect against. Which also gives the church a handy excuse for its heavy-handed presence in the community.

In seeking a theme for the gospog, I wanted to mostly keep the 5th planting from original Torg, the angel of death. I decided upon the idea that they are all obviously humanoid undead, and all manifestations of older or Biblical embodiments of death or the End Times. The danse macabre. The Black Plague. Famine. The Grim Reaper.

In practice, I designed these gospog to be glass cannons. They are very deadly to normal humans, but a concentrated attack should be able to put them down before they cause too much trouble. This makes it easier for Church forces to wipe them out when they do crop up. But they could prove problematic if present in great numbers, or when screened by lesser troops.

2nd Planting

Black Plague Zombie. These gospog look much like 1st plantings, but their fleshy bits are covered with lesions and sores that weep white fluid. Their attacks transmit a disease that is often fatal to common folk.

Gospog (Cyberpapacy 2nd Planting)
Attributes: Charisma 5, Dexterity 7, Mind 7, Spirit 8, Strength 8
Skills: Dodge 8, Find 9, Maneuver 9, Stealth 10, Unarmed Combat 11
Move: 7 (21); Tough: 8; Shock: -; Wounds: –
Special Abilities:

  • Bite/Claws: Damage Strength +2 (10). If the attack equals or exceeds the target’s Toughness, the target contracts disease. Any Wounds taken from the attack count as disease Wounds.
  • Disease: An affected target is Stymied until cured. At the end of each day, target much make an Easy Strength test or take a Wound that cannot be healed until the disease is gone. A Good or better success on the test removes a Wound inflicted by the disease; if all Wounds are removed in this manner so is the disease. A cure disease miracle requires an Outstanding success to cure the disease.
  • Fear: Willpower test or Very Stymied.
  • Mindless: Immune Intimidation, Taunt, Telepathy, mind effects.
  • Relentless: Ignores Shock damage, Fatigue.
  • Undead: Immune breathing, eating, Fatigue, etc. Supernatural Evil.

3rd Planting

Dance of Death Skeleton. Much of the flesh has fallen away from these gospog, revealing the skeleton underneath. Delicate vines and plant matter extend from the black seed held in the skeleton’s rib cage to wrap around the bones and keep the figure together. These undead aren’t usually violent but have a Pied Piper-like ability to get others to follow them when they dance, and the more of the gospog there are, the stronger the compulsion to follow is. They attempt to lead people away from their homes or fortified positions into the open, and then take them to a certain doom.

Gospog (Cyberpapacy 3rd Planting)
Attributes: Charisma 5, Dexterity 9, Mind 8, Spirit 8, Strength 8
Skills: Alteration 12, Dodge 12, Find 10, Maneuver 12, Stealth 11, Trick (9), Unarmed Combat 11
Move: 9 (27); Tough: 10 (1); Shock: -; Wounds: –
Special Abilities:

  • Armor: Enchanted bones +1.
  • Bite/Claws: Damage Strength +2 (10).
  • Dance of Death: Gospog tests Alteration against the targets’ Willpower / Mind. Target must be able to see gospog clearly. Several gospog can combine their efforts with the Combined Actions chart, and multiple targets can be affected with the usual Multi-Target penalties. If the gospog wins the contest, target(s) will dance and follow gospog for duration (see below), or until gospog stop dancing.
    • Standard: Until the end of the target’s next turn, or 10 seconds out of combat.
    • Good: One minute.
    • Outstanding: Until the end of the current scene.
  • Fear: Willpower test or Very Stymied.
  • Mindless: Immune Intimidation, Taunt, Telepathy, mind effects.
  • Relentless: Ignores Shock damage, Fatigue.
  • Undead: Immune breathing, eating, Fatigue, etc. Supernatural Evil.

4th Planting

Famine Skeleton. This planting looks much like the 3rd planting, but its bones are blackened, and the vines that hold it together are withered and dead-looking. It is surrounded by an aura that causes plants to die and living creatures to waste away as if starving. It often carries an unusual high tech, long-handled flail that looks like a staff with a set of scales hanging from the top.

Gospog (Cyberpapacy 4th Planting)
Attributes: Charisma 5, Dexterity 9, Mind 8, Spirit 8, Strength 10
Skills: Dodge 12, Find 10, Intimidation 12, Maneuver 10, Melee Weapons 13, (Reality 9), Stealth 11, Trick (10), Unarmed Combat 13
Move: 9 (27); Tough: 12 (2); Shock: -; Wounds: 1
Equipment: Electrified Scales Staff (Strength +3/13, Two Handed, Painful)
Possibilities: Sometimes (3)
Special Abilities:

  • Armor: Enchanted bones +2.
  • Bite/Claws: Damage Strength +2 (12).
  • Dread: Scene is always Dramatic when present.
  • Famine Aura: Plants wither and die within 60 meters of gospog. Living creatures within 30 meters take 5 + 1 BD damage at the start of their turn, ignoring armor. If the damage equals or exceeds the target’s Toughness, the target becomes Very Stymied until it has eaten a proper meal. If this damage would cause the target to test for defeat, the target is KO’d instead.
  • Fear: Willpower test or Very Stymied.
  • Mindless: Immune Intimidation, Taunt, Telepathy, mind effects.
  • Relentless: Ignores Shock damage, Fatigue.
  • Undead: Immune breathing, eating, Fatigue, etc. Supernatural Evil.

5th Planting

Grim Reaper Skeleton, on a Pale Horse. The final Cyberpapacy gospog is another skeleton, held together and animated by pale vines, riding a skeletal horse-like quadruped. While it appears to be two separate beings, it is actually one; a collection of bones given shape and controlled by the plant matter that extends from the seed at its center. The 5th planting usually wears an off-white robe, and typically carries an electrified scythe. The blade is almost always enhanced by the spiritual power that this gospog can call upon (the strike miracle means that it probably gets an extra +1 to +3 to damage with its scythe).

Gospog (Cyberpapacy 5th Planting)
Attributes: Charisma 5, Dexterity 10, Mind 8, Spirit 10, Strength 12
Skills: Dodge 14, Faith 14, Find 12, Intimidation 15, Maneuver 12, Melee Weapons 14, Reality 11, Trick (11), Unarmed Combat 13
Move: 12 (36); Tough: 15 (3); Shock: -; Wounds: 4
Equipment: UnhalloMesh Robes (Tough +3), Power Scythe (Strength +4/16, Armor Piercing (2), Two Handed)
Perks: Miracles (Curse, Hellfire, Strike)
Possibilities: 5
Special Abilities:

  • Bite/Claws: Damage Strength +2 (14).
  • Dread: Scene is always Dramatic when present.
  • Fear: Willpower test or Very Stymied.
  • Large: +2 to be hit.
  • Mindless: Immune Intimidation, Taunt, Telepathy, mind effects.
  • Relentless: Ignores Shock damage, Fatigue.
  • Undead: Immune breathing, eating, Fatigue, etc. Supernatural Evil.
